King of Peking

Asia in Focus

Directed by Sam Voutas

Set in 1990s Beijing, this film follows the story of a former projectionist feeling the impacts of the home entertainment industry. Together with his young son, he starts creating and selling pirated bootlegged DVDs.
Australian writer-director Sam Voutas (Red Light Revolution) puts his reverence for movies on full display, crafting a beautiful story that is at once an endearing father-son story and a love letter to cinema.

Combines something of the scrappy DIY aesthetic of Michel Gondry’s 'Be Kind, Rewind' with a touch of the joy of discovery found in Giuseppe Tornatore’s 'Cinema Paradiso'.
