Marrma Wanga follows former Olympic swimmer and acclaimed Australian Photographer Simon Upton on his journey into the remote Indigenous community of Milingimbi in East Arnhem Land.

A chance meeting between Simon and eco-conscious swimwear designer Liandra Gaykamangu, sparked this unique and beautiful collaboration who has strong familial and cultural ties to Milingimbi. The pair created several stunning photographic essays in and around the community, one of which featured Liandra’s niece Tarlisa Gaykanmagu.

Tarlisa shares her dream to become a model. The film follows her from Milingimbi to Milan where she appears in the Bottega Veneta runway show. Where she also became the first Indigenous Australian model to ever walk at Milan Fashion Week, As she walks the runway alongside some of the world’s top runway models, Tarlisa’s dream becomes reality. In doing so, she hopes to inspire other young people to follow their dreams.

Simon’s vibrant visual dialogue helps us experience the warmth and energy of this remote location and the Yolngu people. This is a love letter to the people of Milingimbi and a showcase of what can happen when people, cultures and ideas come together.
